Video: Involving Young People in Colorado River Conservation

An advocacy group hopes its new video, filmed on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, will help highlight the importance of getting young people involved in river ecology and conservation.
What You Take Away: A Colorado River Reflection is a short film produced by Freshwaters Illustrated, a nonprofit group that seeks to educate people about the life, study and conservation of freshwater ecosystems.
The film follows Katie, a Colorado teenager who is one of the 40 million people who rely on Colorado River water. She participates in a Grand Canyon Youth boating trip down the Colorado and gains a greater appreciation of the river’s ecosystem and the need to protect it.
Freshwaters Illustrated produced the video in collaboration with Grand Canyon Youth, the U.S. Geological Survey and Grand Canyon National Park. The group says the citizen science shown in the video contributed to a recent study on the effects of hydroelectric dams on river ecosystems.
