Find and Fix Leaks with Scottsdale Water’s Workshops
The Internet is a fantastic educational resource; however, research has shown that students overwhelmingly prefer books over electronic text. While learning about DIYs online is convenient (like when your faucet decides to noisily drip at 3 a.m.), there is just something irreplaceable about learning directly from an expert with a guide in hand. Whether it is the ability to ask questions or jot down notes, workshops help bring education into reality. Scottsdale Water staff, in partnership with the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA), helped create the guide, The Smart Home Water Guide: Find and Fix Leaks that are Draining Your Budget. This easy-to-use leak guide has never before been presented in a classroom, making this an exciting opportunity. Not only will you receive hands-on education, you will learn straight from the source: the presenter, Water Conservation Specialist Jennifer Davidson, is a leak guide expert!
The Smart Home Water Guide focuses on a number of things, including: how to read your water meter; outdoor and indoor visual leak inspection; isolation method for continuous leaks; and water efficiency around the home. While it does a thorough job of walking you through the process of discovering sneaky leaks, plumbing issues can still cause confusion. This workshop will allow you to work through the guide alone, and then bring any burning questions, or it can serve as your first introduction to finding and fixing leaks in your home. The best part is that the process outlined in the book will be taught in class utilizing a real working water meter. If you are like many people and have never read your property’s water meter, it can be extremely beneficial to have an expert show its major features. After this interactive class, no leaks will be able to hide from you! Why is that so important?
Across the nation people are losing a significant amount of water to leaks without even realizing it. According to the EPA, annual household leaks waste 1 trillion gallons per year. Common leaks include worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other leaking valves, all of which are covered in the guide. Fixing some of these leaks may not require a plumber; all you need is a little bit of time and a few tools. The two dates offered for this class are no accident. They coincide with the EPA WaterSense program’s Fix a Leak Week (March 14-20) and Water Awareness Month (April). With your help, and Scottsdale Water’s workshops, we can chase down leaks and promote water conservation in our lives. While participation in Fix a Leak Week is encouraged, remember that you don’t have to wait until March or April to start fixing leaks in your home. Tracking them down now will help save valuable water and money all year long.
