Spring is in the air, and so is the spirit of water conservation! This April, Water – Use It Wisely is gearing up for several exciting events that highlight the importance of water-saving efforts. A variety of activities – from Water Awareness Month to Earth Day to Arbor Day – means that there are plenty of opportunities to have fun while doing your part to save water.
Arizona Water Awareness Month (April 1st – 30th)
April is Arizona Water Awareness Month, a time to get creative and show your love for water! Whether you are just starting your water conservation journey or already an expert water saver, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate Water Awareness Month. Learn more about the festival below. Here are some of our favorite and easy ways to celebrate:
Take shorter showers: Set a goal to keep your shower under 5 minutes. You’ll save water and energy and have more time to enjoy the day!
Fix leaks: Check for leaks in your home, such as dripping faucets or running toilets. A leaky faucet can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year, so fixing them as soon as possible is essential.
Go meatless: Meat production requires a lot of water, so try going meatless for one day a week. You’ll not only save water but also reduce your carbon footprint.
Attend the 3rd annual Water Awareness Month Festival hosted by the Arizona Department of Water Resources. On April 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wesley Bolin Plaza will come alive with activities, exhibits, displays and games all relating to our most precious resource, water. It will be a day of fun activities, food, and 25+ organizations with information on water conservation. In fact, Wayne Drop, our Water – Use It Wisely mascot, will be there!

Planting trees is a fun and rewarding way to positively impact the environment, especially when you choose trees that fit the environment around you. Here in Arizona, we recommend selecting desert-adapted trees that are water thrifty. This helps conserve water and enrich the environment. Here are our favorites! Once you’ve selected your tree and you’re ready to plant, follow our Planting Trees and Shrubs guidelines.
