On average, how much water do you think a person uses each day? If you guessed 120 gallons … you are correct! That figure alone may not be very impressive, but when standing in front of a 16-foot-tall tower equaling 120 gallons, it becomes much more impactful!
During the month of July, you can visit the Water – Use It Wisely water tower at the Queen Creek Library (21802 S. Ellsworth Rd., Queen Creek, AZ 85142) while earning a virtual badge through the Maricopa County Library District’s summer reading program. The Water – Use It Wisely tower is a visual reminder of the daily impact of our water usage and the importance of conserving this natural resource, especially in our desert environment.
Earn Virtual Water Conservation Badges
If making the trip out to Queen Creek is not possible, there are three additional ways to earn virtual water conservation badges:
- Kids and adults can take a deep dive into the Water Conservation challenge by selecting three out of the 15 books, eBooks, videos, or eAudiobooks.
- Geared towards adults, the Water-Smart Workshop challenge encourages Town of Queen Creek water utility customers to register for a free water-smart workshop to learn more about reducing your outdoor water use.
- Another popular activity includes the Water Quiz challenge, which encourages participants to complete the Water – Use It Wisely home water audit.
Last year participants in the summer reading program completed 724 virtual water conservation badges. This year, 936 water conservation badges have already been completed, and there is still another month to participate!
New This Year!
Kids and adults can earn special prizes by participating in these water conservation activities. Adults who complete all four water conservation badges will earn a super badge and be eligible for a chance to win a water conservation prize! Children who complete at least two of the water conservation badges will earn a super badge and may redeem it for one of the many water conservation prizes that include a Wayne Drop beanie baby, insulated lunch bag or t-shirt (while supplies last, must be redeemed in-person at the Queen Creek Library).
“The partnership between the Queen Creek Library and the Town of Queen Creek’s Water Conservation Division has been great in highlighting our summer reading program while encouraging kids and adults to learn more about water conservation. Sign up online to stay cool, save water and earn awesome prizes,” shared Jenny Young, Queen Creek Library Manager. The Maricopa County Library District includes 19 locations throughout Maricopa County and had nearly 82,000 adults and children participate in the 2018 summer reading program.
