Grab a wrench and fix that leak!
Water leaks in a home can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water per year. That’s enough to fill a backyard swimming pool! The most common types of leaks found in the home include leaking toilets, dripping faucets and showerheads, and other seeping valves. Fixing water leaks is simple and easy to do and can save you as much as 10 percent or more on water bills each month.
Fix a Leak Week is March 16-22!
Each year, Arizona WaterSense partners team up with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to sponsor Fix a Leak Week. This campaign brings awareness to the importance of fixing leaks in and around the home. One of our events is the One for Water 4-Miler Race on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Rio Vista Community Park in Peoria. Partners will run, walk, and host informational tables to help encourage us all to find and fix leaks!
Help chase water leaks
Grab the family and your running shoes and help chase down water leaks in this fun, local four-miler event. Walking and running participants will help create awareness about fixing leaks and encouraging water efficiency in our homes, landscapes, and businesses. Whatever your pace – attempting to catch the running toilet for a prize- or taking a leisurely stroll alongside Skunk Creek (trust me, it smells better than it sounds)- you are sure to enjoy the beautiful yellow blooms of the spring desert scenery along the way. Push a stroller or run with Fido – bring the entire family!
Registration is $25 for participants 11 and up ($20 if registered by 2/28) and includes a reusable water bottle, t-shirt, snacks, and a free family festival after the run. The 4-mile race begins at 8 a.m. Kids 10 and younger can compete in the 1-mile event for $10 (starts after the last 4-mile participant has crossed the starting line). Cheerleaders, dogs, and kids in strollers FREE!
Besides the prestigious Fix a Leak Week medals, the top three female and male finishers in their age groups receive pipe wrenches (to fix their leaks). Age groups are: 10 and younger, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over.
Free Family Festival
Don’t despair if running is not your thing. You don’t have to take to the trail to learn about leaks. This free family event will feature tables with leak-fixing demos and lots of free information about how to be water efficient inside and outside of your home. Don’t forget to grab your copy of Find and Fix Leaks that are Draining Your Budget along with a free toilet leak detection card. There will even be activities for the little ones.
You may even get to take a selfie with WUIW’s own Wayne Drop or the world-famous mascot – Leaky Loo McFlapper! This 6’ tall superstar is a reminder that a running toilet is only funny when it’s a mascot.
Race organizers, sponsors, and volunteers do take fixing leaks seriously and hope that you will join them at this truly one-of-a-kind event.
